The Long Fight

The longest rally

Conversation around the gender gap in professional sports hit a fever pitch leading up to the 2019 U.S. Open. We used decades of Times reporting to reveal the long fight of female players. With an iconic women’s tennis rally as our narrative device, every fault matched a headline of a setback, every point, a breakthrough. Billie Jean King’s wooden hits evolved to Venus William’s metallic smashes, mirroring their outspoken voices through the years. It’s a fight we wanted the viewers to feel, not just read about.

Every super pulled from a real headline over the past 50 years of NYT journalism. This became an exhaustive hunt through years of archives to create a narrative that was both simple, thorough—and importantly—historically accurate.
